Moving to Metro Detroit from out of state
Relocating to Oakland County is one of the best decisions you can make, but the learning curve is real. I've helped dozens of out-of-state families figure out which suburb actually fits their life. Here's what I tell them.
The Woodward Corridor
Oakland County's suburbs are not interchangeable
The single most important thing I tell people moving here is that Birmingham, Royal Oak, Troy, Rochester Hills and Bloomfield are not five versions of the same place. They are five genuinely different cities with different personalities, different schools, different price points, and different day-to-day experiences.
Birmingham
The walkable downtown, Birmingham Public Schools, and a strong sense of community. This is the premium address in Oakland County for families who want the downtown lifestyle. Price range from condos in the $350Ks to estates well over $1M. The most common move-up path is from Royal Oak, Troy, Ferndale or Berkley into Birmingham.
Royal Oak
The most energetic downtown in Oakland County. The Detroit Zoo, Restaurant Row, and a walkable grid of shops and bars. Slightly lower entry price than Birmingham with strong schools. A great choice for young professionals and families who want the buzz of a real downtown.
Troy
Top school district, major retail corridors, and a wide range of housing. Troy is the practical choice for families who prioritize school quality and want access to everything without paying the Birmingham premium. More spread out, less walkable, but excellent value.
Rochester Hills
Exceptional parks, trails, and outdoor access. Rochester Hills is the choice for families who want a slightly quieter pace and love being outside. The Paint Creek Trail, Rochester Parks system, and strong schools make it a favorite for nature-oriented families.
Bloomfield Hills
Estate living, Cranbrook, and the most prestigious address in the county. Larger lots, more privacy, and higher price points. For families who want space and quiet without sacrificing access to everything Oakland County offers.
What to Expect
The things nobody tells you before you move
Winter is real
Michigan winters are genuinely cold and snowy. But the communities here are built for it. Roads are well-maintained, schools rarely close, and everyone has a winter routine. The trick is to buy a good coat and embrace it. Plus, spring through fall in Metro Detroit is genuinely beautiful, and the fall foliage rivals anywhere in the country.
You'll probably need a car
Birmingham's downtown is the big exception, but most of Oakland County is car-dependent. The good news is that commutes are short, parking is easy, and the highway system connects everything. If you're coming from a major city, this will feel like a culture shift. If you're coming from a suburb elsewhere, it'll feel familiar.
Property taxes vary wildly
Michigan property taxes depend on the city, the school district, and whether you qualify for a Principal Residence Exemption. Birmingham's taxes are higher than Troy's. Bloomfield Township's are lower than Bloomfield Hills'. This is one of the first things I help relocating families understand, because it directly affects what you can afford.
School quality is a differentiator
Oakland County has some of the best public schools in Michigan. Birmingham, Troy, Rochester, Bloomfield Hills and Bloomfield Township all rank consistently high. If schools are a priority for your move, you're in one of the best places in the state to land. I can walk you through the differences between them.

We grab coffee downtown, drive through the school districts, walk the parks. It's not just house tours. It's a guided introduction to the communities you're choosing between.
Once you've made a decision, I handle the remote logistics. Video walkthroughs, digital document signing, and a timeline that makes sense for your move. I've done this enough times that the process is smooth even when we're coordinating across state lines.
